PAUL REEVE
What did you work on with Muse around the release of Hullabaloo?
“I didn’t really stop working with them from when we went in with ‘The Muse EP’. A lot of people forget Hullabaloo – it’s a DVD of the gig and the other CD is a collection of the best B-sides that we recorded over that period. We only ever recorded one or two things together, so we never did a whole album’s worth but we probably did 20 or 30 recordings in that time. I personally think there’s something about the Absolution collection of B-sides that is really quite special. I did some work with them involving radio, on-the-hoof production. I didn’t have anything to do with Origin Of Symmetry, but during that time I was doing the B-sides and Matt was experimenting with different producers.”
You were a kind of producer on hand?
“Yes, I think that’s about right. The band felt very comfortable with me, there was no fear from my point of view of putting ideas across and there was no fear from their point of view of telling me to fuck off, and vice versa. Whenever I speak to the band we still have that, which is great. I didn’t go on the road, but every few months we’d go in the studio and do a new batch of B-sides.”
They did a lot ofgrowing up over the Origin Of Symmetry tour – were they different people every time you saw them?
“Yes. I don’t see how you could fail to be. If you go through an experience like that and remain unchanged there’s something wrong. But fundamentally they’re still the same people. Chris especially is a very rooted chap in a lot of ways, a very earthy chap, and he’s probably changed the least. On the whole they’ve changed for the better. People say fame spoils people, but fame is an experience and so is success, and if you don’t take something from it, what’s the fucking point? Matt certainly has a hugely eclectic collection of interests. He’s got a very healthy relationship, in my opinion, with paranoia and conspiracy, and he’s used his wealth and opportunity to mine that and expand his mind, which I think is the sort of thing I’d be trying to do if I had that sort of success. They have changed, but in an interesting and positive way.”
Were there any sparks of magic in the studio?
“We recorded things like ‘Niche’ – if you knew it you’d be an anorak – basically there’s no singing in it, it’s a pseudo jazz piece like The Beatles might do on Abbey Road. Personally, my favourite records are things like Abbey Road … this whole little journey, this montage of creations that sit next to each other. I’m certainly not laying claim to it, but any creative input I did have would have been to try to move it towards something more experimental. I did have a conversation with Matt once, the last time I
